European Tour Announce
Australian quintet The Paper Kites are returning to European shores in support of their album twelvefour, a sprawling listen that explores new terrain and has been heralded as their best work yet. It followed on from their debut album, States, and was released four years after the band formed and started turning heads with their debut EP Woodland.
Written entirely between midnight and four in the morning, twelvefour is a concept record that explores the theory that an artist’s creative peak lays within these hours. For two sleepless months lead singer/guitarist Sam Bentley worked, reversing his sleep patterns and penning 30 songs in his home studio.
Lyrically, twelvefour isn’t about some sort of somnambulist or insomniac blues, however. “You’re always more melancholy during those hours,” Sam points out. “but if I could sum up the album it’s about what happens when selfishness and love collide.”
To achieve a bigger and bolder sound, the group travelled to Seattle to record with Grammy-nominated producer Phil Ek (Father John Misty, Manchester Orchestra, Fleet Foxes, The Shins). As such, twelvefour is lush and intimate: think drum machines, dirtier guitars mixed with soulful, smooth synth moment. Plentiful late night vibes.
